Mihail, an art curator, emigrated to Canada decades ago. When asked to assess a work by a child prodigy, he is forced to return to Bulgaria, a country he has long regarded as hopelessly backward. The journey gives him an opportunity to rediscover his roots. A tender film about returning home, it critically examines the exploitation of the Balkan region by Western Europe, personal identity and the “exoticisation” of the region with commendable awareness. The film won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the 2026 Berlinale and is Canada’s submission to the Oscars.
